Peter Revson 1969/70 USAC championship race suit

An exceptionally rare original race suit of US driver Peter Revson. The suit we believe is from the 1969/1970 season’s when Revson drove in the USAC championship and also the 12 hours of Sebring race with Steve McQueen. All logo’s are stitched on and Revson’s name is embroidered into the suit, there is evidence of the previous Gulf logos that were initially on the suit and removed at a later date. The suit itself is in very good condition and shows many signs of race usage. Peter was the son of Martin Revlon who founded the famous cosmetic company so was heir to a fortune but he passed this up to concentrate on his motor racing career. In 1969, Revson competed in his first Indy 500 finishing in an impressive 5th place after starting last. To make the feat even more impressive, Revson was racing in an underpowered Brabham BT25. At the Indy 500 the following year, Revson gained major exposure and entrance to a top team when McLaren’s Indy car team asked him to drive the race following the release of Chris Amon. That same year he teamed up with famed movie star Steve McQueen and the duo finished second in the 12 hours of Sebring behind a Ferrari driven by Mario Andretti. Though McQueen received most of the credit for driving with a broken foot it was Revson who drove the bulk of the race in the Porsche 908/2. Revson also finished the 1970 Can-Am season runner-up while driving a Lola T220 for the Haas team. In 1971 he became the first American to win the SCCA Can-Am championship, driving for McLaren. His best year at Indy was in 1971, when he won the pole position and finished second in the race itself. He joined the Mclaren F1 team in 1972 and finished fifth in the F1 driver’s championship standings with four podium finishes including three third place finishes and a second place finish. In 1972 Revson was even more successful winning both the British and Canadian GP’s and again finishing fifth in the driver’s championship. Tragically Revson was killed during a test session on 22 March 1974 before the 1974 South African Grand Prix in Kyalami. While driving the Shadow DN3, he suffered a front suspension failure and crashed heavily into the Armco barrier on the outside of “Barbecue Bend”. In 1996 Revson was inducted into the motorsport hall of fame of America. This race suit is a truly exceptional and historic item of motor racing memorabilia, serious enquiries only please.
